Overnight Carnage:
Israeli forces unleashed another round of strikes on Gaza City overnight, targeting a school-turned-shelter, displacement tents, and homes. The strikes killed at least 17 Palestinians, many of them children and displaced persons who had already lost everything in the nearly two-year war.
The attacks, which hit the al-Farabi School, a tent camp near al-Wafa Hospital, and residential apartments in Sheikh Radwan, left bodies buried under concrete slabs and survivors recounting scenes of horror.
“We have recovered two hands so far,” said eyewitness Mohammed Ayed, standing near the rubble of al-Farabi. “These are children’s hands.”
Children In The Rubble:
The al-Farabi School, once a place of learning, had become a fragile sanctuary for displaced families. On Saturday night, it was turned into a graveyard.
Sohaib Foda, who had been sleeping on a mattress inside, woke to the sound of an explosion.
“I heard a thud, and a block fell on my face. My cousin’s daughter, who was sleeping here, got injured and fell beside me. Another block then fell on her head… I was covered in blood.”
For Palestinians crammed into schools and tents, there are no safe zones left. The IDF systematically struck schools, hospitals, mosques, and refugee camps, which were once designated as protected under international law.
The Numbers Behind the War:
The Palestinian Health Ministry paints a picture of unrelenting slaughter:
- 87 killed and 409 wounded in Saturday’s attacks alone.
- Since October 2023: over 100,000 Palestinians killed, approx. 377,000 wounded and maimed.
- Since March, when Israel broke a ceasefire, over 11,911 killed, and over 50,735 wounded.
- In just the past 24 hours: 31 Palestinians killed while seeking aid, 132 wounded, and five more dead from starvation, including three children.
- Since famine was declared, 109 deaths have occurred, among them 23 children.
These figures tell a story of genocide carried out in slow motion, bombs from the sky paired with deliberate starvation on the ground.
Patterns Of Targeting:
The Israeli military claims it strikes “terrorist infrastructure,” yet patterns show otherwise:
- Shelters and schools, like al-Farabi, were repeatedly bombed.
- Tents housing displaced families near hospitals or so-called humanitarian corridors, were attacked.
- Residential towers, once homes for thousands, were systematically reduced to dust.
Each strike cuts deeper into Gaza’s civilian fabric, and each official justification rings hollow.
Day 700 Of A Genocidal Campaign:
Friday marked 700 days of war. The enclave, already strangled by blockade, is in free fall: famine grips northern Gaza, infectious diseases spread in overcrowded camps, and Israel continues to bomb those it has displaced.
The offensive on Gaza City is particularly ruthless. Hundreds of thousands who fled earlier assaults in the north and east were forced into this urban centre. Now, they are trapped again, as they are bombed from the air and starved on the ground.
International Law And Impunity:
The legal record is clear:
- In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity.
- Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which has ordered provisional measures to stop mass killings and allow aid, but Israel has ignored them.
Despite these rulings, Israel faces no meaningful sanctions. Its Western allies, led by the United States and the United Kingdom, continue to provide diplomatic cover and military aid.
Voices From The Rubble:
The survivors’ words are stark reminders of what international statistics often obscure:
- Children were pulled out in pieces.
- Fathers carrying their lifeless sons.
- Mothers crushed beneath the rubble of what they thought was a shelter.
The world has grown accustomed to the numbers, but every statistic hides a family obliterated, a community ripped apart.
Conclusion:
Israel’s overnight massacre in Gaza is not an accident of war, nor collateral damage. It is part of a deliberate strategy: destroy homes, attack shelters, starve families, erase communities, bomb schools, hospitals, and make Gaza unlivable.
The evidence from casualty statistics, eyewitness accounts, and the systematic targeting of shelters aligns with the legal definition of genocide. Yet international mechanisms lag behind, and accountability remains elusive and not-enforced.
Day 700 of this war is not only a marker of Palestinian suffering but also of global complicity. Each bomb that falls on a school or tent lands with the weight of silence from world powers who refuse to act.
