Colombian President Gustavo Petro has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, labelling the situation as “anti-human” and accusing Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinian people. On May 1, 2024, Petro announced that Colombia would sever diplomatic relations with Israel, describing its actions in Gaza as “genocide.” This move was accompanied by the suspension of military cooperation and arms purchases from Israel, signalling a significant shift in Colombia’s foreign policy. Additionally, Colombia sought to join South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which accuses Israel of violating the Genocide Convention in Gaza.

South Africa’s case at the ICJ is a comprehensive legal challenge alleging that Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide. The court has issued provisional measures instructing Israel to prevent genocidal acts and facilitate humanitarian aid. Petro’s condemnation of Israel aligns Colombia with a bloc of countries in the Global South advocating for Palestinian rights and accountability for alleged war crimes.
