WASHINGTON – The white-knuckle countdown is ticking towards President Donald Trump’s self-imposed Tuesday deadline, a menacing and profanity-laced threat to unleash what he has branded “Power Plant Day” and “Bridge Day” on Iran if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. As the clock winds down, the political earthquake at home is not just about war; it is about whether the man holding the codes is fit to stay in the Oval Office. A bipartisan chorus, including some of Trump’s former allies, is now calling for his immediate removal via the 25th Amendment. What was once dismissed as fringe rhetoric has become a mainstream demand, fueled by the conviction that the “Emperor Has No Clothes” and that the nation is being steered by a leader descending into profound instability and profanity.
The Easter Ultimatum: A Precedent-Shattering Message.
On a day symbolising peace and rebirth, President Trump used his Truth Social platform to post what legal experts and lawmakers are calling an explicit threat of war crimes. In a message laced with expletives, Trump warned Iran:

He later added a specific deadline: “Tuesday, 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time!” This public promise to target civilian infrastructure has sent shockwaves through Washington. International legal norms explicitly define the deliberate destruction of civilian power grids and bridges as a war crime unless they are being used exclusively for military purposes. The president, however, appears unconcerned, with CNN’s Jake Tapper noting during his broadcast, “Be warned: the president did not use polite language,” before highlighting that “destroying civilian power infrastructure is generally considered to constitute a war crime.”
The 25th Amendment: A Constitutional Firebreak.
The 25th Amendment, ratified in 1967 following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, was designed to handle presidential incapacitation. While Sections 1 through 3 have been used for succession and temporary transfers of power, Section 4 has never been invoked in U.S. history. It allows the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet to declare the President “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” immediately transferring executive authority to the Vice President as Acting President.
Given the unprecedented nature of Trump’s threats and his public behaviour, calls for invoking Section 4 have reached a fever pitch. Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy wrote on X, echoing the sentiment of many:
“If I were in Trump’s Cabinet, I would spend Easter calling constitutional lawyers about the 25th Amendment. This is completely, utterly unhinged. He’s already killed thousands. He’s going to kill thousands more.”
The Political Firestorm: A Fractured Capitol.
The reaction to Trump’s Easter message has shattered the typical partisan lines, exposing deep fractures within the Republican Party and uniting a wide spectrum of critics in a singular demand for removal.
- The Break with MAGA: The most stunning rebuke came from former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, once one of Trump’s staunchest allies. She did not hold back:
“On Easter morning, this is what President Trump posted. Everyone in his administration who claims to be a Christian needs to fall on their knees and beg forgiveness from God, stop worshipping the President and intervene in Trump’s madness. I know all of you and him, and he has gone insane, and all of you are complicit.”
She concluded that the war policy was not just a mistake, but “evil,” stating, “This is not making America great again, this is evil.”
- Democratic Demands: Democratic lawmakers did not mince words, labelling the president a direct threat. Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.) stated flatly:
“The 25th Amendment exists for a reason. The President of the United States is a deranged lunatic, and a national security threat to our country and the rest of the world.”
Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) invoked the classic fable, writing, “The emperor has no clothes. Time for the #25thAmendment. Congress and the Cabinet must act.”
- Former Republicans Sound the Alarm: The calls for removal extended to former Republican officials. Joe Walsh, a former congressman who once supported Trump, argued for immediate action, stating that Trump “will forever be a stain on this country. And the world. 25th Amendment. Now.”

The Will Of The People: Public Opinion Crumbles.
Behind the walls of Congress, the American public has already made up its mind. The traditional “rally ’round the flag” effect that usually accompanies military action has failed to materialise, replaced instead by widespread scepticism and anger over rising costs.
- Overwhelming Disapproval: According to a late March Pew Research poll, 61% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict. This is not a narrow margin; it is a repudiation. An AP-NORC survey found that six in ten Americans believe U.S. military action against Iran has already “gone too far.”
- The Economic Toll: The war has directly impacted the wallets of American voters. The average U.S. petrol price hit $4.11 a gallon on Sunday, up from below $3 when the strikes began. Gas station receipts have become the most tangible reminder of the war, turning a distant geopolitical crisis into a daily pocketbook issue.
- The “Forever War” Fear: Among Trump’s base, there is a growing fear that he has broken his “America First” promise. Polling shows that while Republicans remain largely supportive, younger conservatives are uneasy. Memories of Iraq and Afghanistan loom large, and the idea of a prolonged Middle East entanglement is draining enthusiasm from the MAGA movement.

The Human Toll: Casualties And Consequences.
The rhetoric on social media translates into very real bloodshed on the ground. The war, which began on February 28 with Operation Epic Fury, has now killed an estimated 3,500 to 6,900 people in Iran alone, including over 1,500 civilians, according to independent human rights organisations. The conflict is no longer a distant “surgical strike” operation.
- American Losses: The Pentagon has confirmed that 13 American service members have been killed and more than 360 wounded. However, independent analyses, including one from The Intercept, suggest the numbers may be higher, claiming at least 15 U.S. troops have died and more than 520 have been injured. The downing of a U.S. F-15 fighter jet by Iranian air defences last week served as a stark reminder that the skies over Iran are not as secure as the administration claimed.
- The Humanitarian Crisis: Israeli and U.S. strikes have devastated Iranian infrastructure. A strike on the B1 bridge near Tehran killed eight people and wounded 95. Just this week, Iranian state media reported that six children were among those killed in overnight strikes on Tehran. The war has also spread to Lebanon, where Israeli airstrikes have resumed against Hezbollah, killing dozens more civilians.
Iran’s Response: Mockery And Military Resolve.
If the Trump administration expected Iran to cower under the threat of profanity-laced social media posts, it miscalculated. Tehran has responded with a mix of military escalation and devastating diplomatic mockery.
- Diplomatic Insults: Iranian embassies around the world have weaponised Trump’s rhetoric against him. The Iranian embassy in South Africa pointedly referenced the political chaos in Washington, posting, “Seriously think about the 25th amendment, Section 4.” The embassy in Austria added a biting critique, stating that Trump “has stooped to an unprecedented level of begging, laced with bitter, hollow rudeness and threats.”
- Military Threats: On the military front, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has warned of a “new Persian Gulf order,” declaring that the Strait of Hormuz “will never return to its former state, especially for the US and Israel.” Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, warned Trump that his “reckless moves are dragging the United States into a living HELL for every single family, and our whole region is going to burn.”
Cabinet Complicity: The Silence Of The Sycophants.
As the calls for removal grow louder, a glaring question remains: Where is the Cabinet?
Section 4 of the 25th Amendment requires the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet to act. Yet, Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth have remained publicly silent regarding the president’s fitness. While reports suggest Vance has expressed private doubts about the war, he has not broken publicly. Critics argue that the Cabinet’s inaction is not ignorance, but complicity.
Activist Melanie D’Arrigo captured this sentiment, suggesting the cabinet is silent because they are personally profiting from the war, writing, “It’s because they’re happily complicit and compromised.” Anthony Scaramucci, Trump’s former White House Communications Director, noted the Founders envisioned this scenario, stating, “It was at this point that our Founders thought the best thing to do would be to remove a mad-man from the Oval Office.”

What Comes Next?
As the Tuesday deadline approaches, the world is holding its breath. Behind the scenes, diplomatic efforts are crumbling. A 45-day ceasefire plan drawn up by mediating nations, including Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, has been sent to Washington and Tehran, but Trump has reportedly refused to back it. Even as he threatens to “blow everything up,” Trump has also told Fox News there is a “good chance” of a deal. This erratic oscillation between diplomacy and destruction is precisely what has his critics terrified.
The betting markets are taking notice. On prediction platforms like Kalshi, trading volumes are rising as users bet on the likelihood of the 25th Amendment being invoked to impeach and remove the president from office. As Congress remains gridlocked and the bodies pile up, the question is no longer whether the president is stable, but how much more destruction will occur before his own cabinet decides that the emperor has, indeed, no clothes.
*The conflict has resulted in heavy casualties, with Iranian deaths estimated at over 1,900 and more than 24,800 injured, including the confirmed deaths of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, top security official Ali Larijani, and Intelligence Minister Esmaeil Khatib. Israeli and U.S. forces continue their operations amid international calls for de-escalation.*
