    GAZA CITY, 12 OCTOBER 2025 — Palestinian citizen-journalist and social media content creator Saleh Aljafarawi was shot dead in the Sabra (al-Sabra) neighbourhood of southern Gaza City, according to multiple local and regional media sources. The 28-year-old had been documenting post-conflict scenes of destruction and, just days earlier, had publicly celebrated the newly brokered Gaza ceasefire, a rare moment of optimism in a war-scarred enclave.

    Local eyewitnesses reported that Aljafarawi was cornered by armed gunmen and struck with multiple bullets while wearing a press vest. Gaza’s Interior Ministry, via Al Jazeera, said the shooting occurred amid clashes between Hamas security forces and an “armed Israeli militia affiliated with the occupation,” a phrasing used by many Palestinian sources to denote forces or gangs alleged to be collaborating with Israel.

    Who Was Saleh Aljafarawi? The Voice From Gaza.

    Born 22 November 1997 in Gaza City, Saleh al-Jafarawi, also spelt Aljafarawi or Al­Jaʿfarāwī, was widely known as a citizen-journalist, social media influencer, and singer. His online presence grew dramatically during the war that erupted in October 2023, as he shared frontline videos, scenes of destruction, rescue operations, and personal reflections from within Gaza.

    He often posted from damaged neighbourhoods, hospitals, and displaced persons camps, places where foreign journalists could not safely venture due to Israel’s tight restrictions. Over time, his content reached millions, and his persona became part of Gaza’s visual record of wartime life amid devastation. In March 2025, he publicly revealed that his two Instagram accounts, with a combined following of 9.5 million, had been suspended without warning, forcing him to rely on backup accounts.

    His reporting and social media presence made him a target of propaganda and misinformation. At various points, pro-Israeli media questioned his authenticity, alleging staged scenes, while supporters defended him as a frontline witness. Those tensions shaped both how he was perceived and how he operated under threat.

    Earlier in 2025, a version of an official Israeli “red notice” or hit list was rumoured to include his name, in line with past claims that Israel had blacklists of Palestinian journalists it deemed hostile. (This mirrored past targeting of figures like Anas al-Sharif.)

    In his final public acts, he posted images and videos from Gaza’s ruins and joined many Palestinians in celebrating the ceasefire, capturing a fleeting moment of hope after two years of relentless conflict.

    Ceasefire, Security Vacuum, And Internal Clashes:

    Aljafarawi’s killing comes at a precarious moment: the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas had just entered into effect, halting active bombardment and scaling down military operations. The deal included Israeli troop withdrawal from parts of Gaza City, a prisoner exchange, and the reopening of crossings for humanitarian aid.

    However, with Israel’s forces drawing back and Gaza’s infrastructure largely destroyed, a security vacuum emerged, one that local militias, clans, and armed groups reportedly sought to exploit.     Because of this overlap between internal security efforts and violence involving disputed militias, some observers question whether Aljafarawi was caught in a crossfire or whether his killing was a deliberate execution by collaborator gangs, as his supporters claim. The circumstances remain contested.

    The Media Death Toll And Pattern Of Targeting:

    Aljafarawi is just one name among many journalists and media workers who have lost their lives during the war. According to the International Federation of Journalists, as of mid-2025, more than 246 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza, a mortality rate that far surpasses what any frontline profession endures. The Committee to Protect Journalists and the International Press Institute have similarly documented dozens of deaths, making this conflict possibly the deadliest ever for journalists.

    One of the highest-profile casualties occurred in August 2025, when Anas al-Sharif, a correspondent for Al Jazeera, was killed by an Israeli airstrike near Al-Shifa Hospital. Five other journalists were also killed in that strike, prompting widespread condemnation and renewed scrutiny of Israel’s claims that al-Sharif was involved in militant activity.

    Other victims include Hossam Shabat, who died in March 2025 after his car was struck near Beit Lahia. The Israeli military later claimed he engaged in “terrorist activity,” though critics dismiss those allegations as attempts to justify targeted killings. Also killed was Yahya Sobeih, a freelance journalist in Gaza City, struck in May 2025 while reporting on humanitarian conditions. Photojournalists, too, have fallen: Ibrahim Mahmoud Hajjaj was killed in July 2025 by Israeli shelling in Al-Daraj, while Yahya Barzaq, a Cypriot-Palestinian photographer, was killed in September 2025 while covering destruction in central Gaza.

    These deaths demonstrate several worrying trends:

    • Systematic risk to journalists: With foreign media often denied access to Gaza, local and citizen journalists shoulder the burden of coverage and the danger.
    • Targeted accusation narratives: In many cases, Israel has claimed that slain journalists were militants who abused their media status, claims rarely substantiated in independent investigations.
    • Proxy violence and internal cliques: the use of militias or collaborator gangs to conduct or enable extrajudicial killings is believed to be a strategy to circumvent accountability. Aljafarawi’s alleged targeting by an “Israeli-linked militia” fits this pattern.
    • Post-conflict security gaps: ceasefires, while stopping open warfare, do not immediately guarantee law and order. Competing armed groups often seek power in the vacuum. Aljafarawi’s killing is illustrative of that fragile transition.

    Reactions, Mourning, And Aftermath:

    News of Aljafarawi’s death triggered outpourings of grief across Gaza and the Palestinian diaspora. His brother, Naji al-Jaʿfrawi, was reportedly scheduled for release under the same prisoner exchange Aljafarawi had publicly anticipated. One journalist, Motaz Azaiza, lamented:

    “Saleh left before he could embrace Naji. Today, everyone is waiting for Naji’s release, and the biggest shock will be when he doesn’t find Saleh waiting for him.”

    Another activist, Ali Battah, shared a photo with Aljafarawi, writing: “May God accept him among the martyrs.”

    Beyond personal mourning, media organisations and human rights groups renewed calls for accountability. The Foreign Press Association urged Israel to permit full, unfettered press access to Gaza following the ceasefire, noting that many foreign outlets rely entirely on local journalists in the absence of direct entry. In parallel, UN experts demanded action to protect journalists, warning that unless states act, the silencing of Gaza’s media may become irreversible.

    At the broader level, Aljafarawi’s killing underscores a critical dilemma: even as bombs fall, so too can the voices that document the fall itself.

    Complexities And Contestations:

    While many Palestinian and regional outlets framed Aljafarawi’s death as an assassination by Israeli collaborator gangs, other narratives caution against reductionism:

    • Internal factionalism: Gaza is not a monolith. Rival clans, militant groups, and local power brokers have been in conflict for years. Some analysts suggest that the Doghmush clan, mentioned in some reports, clashed with Hamas security forces independently of direct Israeli orchestration.
    • Fog of war: In high-tension, chaotic environments, eyewitness testimonies diverge. Some suggest Aljafarawi was caught in crossfire rather than singled out. The absence of independent investigations makes it difficult to definitively assign responsibility.

    Even so, the symbolic power of Aljafarawi’s death cannot be overstated: a journalist killed just as a ceasefire began, in a neighbourhood he likely viewed as reclaimable, while documenting both destruction and hope.

    Call To Action: Truth, Accountability, And Press Safety.

    Saleh Aljafarawi’s killing must not become another footnote in Gaza’s unfolding tragedy. It should be a watershed moment for demanding accountability, protection, and systemic change. But any credible call to action must rest on the scale of the crisis confronting journalists in Gaza.

    The Scale of the Crisis:

    • According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least 192 journalists and media workers have been killed since the Israel–Gaza war began on 7 October 2023. Of those, 184 were Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.
    • Other reports place higher counts: The Watson Institute’s Costs of War project estimated 232 journalists killed, averaging 13 per month, making the Gaza conflict the deadliest ever recorded for media workers.
    • The United Nations has separately asserted that at least 242 Palestinian journalists have died in Gaza since October 2023.
    • Reporters Without Borders (RSF), in tandem with global media coalitions, has launched campaigns demanding protection, access, and an end to impunity, highlighting that Gaza has become “the deadliest place in the world for reporters.”
    • The Gaza Government Media Office claimed that since October 7, 2023, over 201 journalists have been killed and 399 journalists and media personnel injured by Israeli forces.

    These numbers point to a grim reality: the Gaza conflict is not only historic for its civilian toll but also for its assault on knowledge, truth, and memory.

    What Must Be Done:

    Given the magnitude of this assault on journalists, the following steps are urgent and non-negotiable:

    1. Independent, transparent investigations
      The world must demand a real, impartial inquiry into each journalist’s death. These should not be superficial fact-finding missions but full criminal probes under international law, with public reporting and prosecution where evidence supports it.
    2. ICC and legal action
      The targeting of journalists, especially in conflict zones, may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity. Press freedom and human rights organisations like IFJ, RSF, and CPJ must press for referrals to the International Criminal Court (ICC) or comparable tribunals.
    3. Binding protections for journalists in conflict areas
      States party to international humanitarian law must adopt enforceable protocols to shield journalists, including safe corridors, neutrality assurances, and sanctions for violations.
    4. Immediate humanitarian and press access
      Foreign media, UN bodies, and human rights investigators must gain unfettered entry to Gaza to document and verify alleged abuses. Restricting access in the name of security guarantees opacity and impunity.
    5. Sanctions and political pressure
      Political leaders, especially in states that support Israel diplomatically or militarily, should attach consequences to violations of press freedom, targeting officials implicated in journalist harm with sanctions, visa bans, or accountability measures.
    6. Strengthening local and international safety networks
      Develop rapid response teams, legal aid funds, emergency extraction plans, and protection mechanisms for journalists, especially citizen journalists and freelancers who face the greatest vulnerability.

    Conclusion: The Price Of Bearing Witness.

    Saleh Aljafarawi’s death is not an isolated tragedy; it is part of a systemic campaign to erase Gaza’s record-keepers. His killing, during a supposed ceasefire, by gunmen reportedly tied to Israeli collaborators, underscores how Israel’s machinery of control now extends beyond bombardment.     Saleh Aljafarawi’s killing is a stark reminder that in many modern conflicts, the battlefield includes not only trenches and drones, but also cameras, social media, and memory. Journalists in Gaza have long operated under existential threat, squeezed between bombardment and suppression, with little recourse for protection or justice. In a conflict where control of narratives is as vital as control of territory, silencing local journalists serves multiple ends: erasing evidence, spreading fear, and discouraging others from going forward. Washington and its allies continue to frame the deaths of Gaza’s journalists as “tragic collateral,” rather than as policy, a framing that shields perpetrators and perpetuates impunity.

    Investigations into press killings in Gaza have historically gone nowhere, stalled by political obstruction and the absence of independent access. Yet each death, each erased byline, accumulates as evidence of a broader crime, a war not only against a people, but against the very act of witnessing. Aljafarawi’s murder during “peace” speaks to a truth long understood in Gaza: the war on journalists does not end with a ceasefire; it is simply repackaged in quieter forms of repression.

    His death will likely become another rallying symbol, a martyrdom narrative amid an embattled press corps. But symbols alone are not enough. Without serious international pressure, transparent investigation, and systemic reform to protect journalists, the cycle will continue. The global community, media institutions, human rights organisations, and states must act to safeguard those who risk everything just to tell the truth.

    In Gaza, the erasure of witnesses is an act of domination. To allow it to stand is to concede the narrative to power. Saleh Aljafarawi’s lens captured both horror and humanity, and his killing reminds the world that even peace can be deadly for those who dare to remember.
